We decided today to go for a little drive up the coast for a look at a town called Woolgoolga followed by a walk and a picnic in the rain forest at Sherwood Reserve before finally looking for kangaroos in the Moonee Reserve.
After a short drive we arrived in Woolgoolga but quickly realised there wasn't much there and carried on driving through until we reached the headland. What a view. You could see for miles across golden sand with crashing surf and barely a soul to be seen. The whales were splashing about off the headland and a couple of spear fisherman were bobbing about in the surf. The sun was warm and the sky blue and we could have stayed there all day however we had other plans.
We drove on to Sherwood reserve but not before stopping to look at one of the two Sikh temples in the town. It seems a little out of place but Woolgoolga has had a large population of Sikhs for over 100 years.
The drive to the reserve was short but along narrowing and bumpy roads but we arrived in a little sunlit clearing amongst the rainforest for our picnic which we would have all to ourselves as the place was deserted. There was even a little toilet however I had to do a spider and snake check before Ali would use it!
The little information board told of the wildlife we may encounter on the short walk along the Woolgoolga Creek to a small waterfall. Pythons, rock wallabies, giant-barred frogs, brush turkeys, grey headed flying foxes and many more creatures were all possibilities. We saw a turkey, yep a turkey. That's it. And that was in the car park! The walk was pleasant and the creek nearly dry so it was easy to cross when needed. As it was the dry season the waterfall at the end was little more than a trickle over the rocks but hey ho.
Emily was a little freaked out that there could be pythons and was a little cautious the whole way, even eating her picnic she was on edge as the sign said to protect your food as goannas could be aggressive and come after it.
After our walk we drove to Moonee nature reserve and Look At Me Now headland to search for kangaroos, we spotted them in peoples back gardens before we even got to the car park. We had a little walk in the evening sun on another nearly empty expanse of sand. Just us and a few surfers. The kangaroos were munching on the grass on the hill next to the beach, just unbelieveable. A little walk up the hill and we were surrounded by them including little joeys in pouches.
Not a bad day really and a decent little explore.
