A quick tidy up of the house and a pack of cases for our 12 day 'Walkabout' which will take us to Byron Bay, Brisbane, Hamilton Island and Gold Coast.
The drive up to Byron took about 3 hours mainly due to massive roadworks on the Pacific Highway almost the entire way. You don't see much on the way other than a few small towns which look fairly backward and are pretty much only there for people to refuel or stock up on supplies. There were plenty of rivers and rainforest but not an awful lot else to see so we amused ourselves looking at street names such as Bald Knob Road or working out what the roadkill was. (Kangaroo won)
It was fairly easy to find our digs and check in. The site is mainly geared up for backpackers and there are lots of chalets and a common room/kitchen area and shared showers but we don't slum it like that. We had a small self contained bungalow which was more than adequate for our needs if a little chilly when the temperature dropped to about 3c overnight.
We had lunch in the Treehouse cafe next door under the watchful eyes of a resident bush turkey and then hit the beach until the sun went down and it got cold. I think Emily would be happy to just live on the beach. We then walked into town to get a few breakfast things and a snack.
Walking back we looked up and realised that without the light pollution you could see so many stars and even the milky way, it was incredible. Ali managed to see a shooting star as well whilst I saw a fruit bat fly over which is incredible when you see it with it's wings fully extended.
